Portman Mansions is a Victorian mansion block, built in the late 19 th Century and currently consists of 120 flats (122 including the estate office and gym) in 9 mansion blocks in Chiltern and Porter Streets (Blocks 1,2,3,4,5,8,10,12,14).

In June 1973 leases of 125 years were issued for the first time with very little initial interest. However over the next 17 years, all but 8 of these leases were taken up.

From 1990 – 1993 the Landlord was the subject of an Administration order, and subsequently went into Receivership.

In August 1993 the Receivers, on behalf of the Landlord, exchanged contracts with a prospective purchaser for the sale of the freehold but under the Landlord and Tenant Act, the leaseholders were able to exercise their right of first refusal.
